Sometimes I’m a little bit slow at figuring things out, like when I decided to start building a business. I had huge plans to create this work-at-home business based on Virtual Assisting. You see, I’ve spent 25+ years as an Administrative Assistant so why couldn’t I just do that at home?
Welcome to Reality
It doesn’t exactly worth that way, does it?
If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try and Try Again
I have narrowed my services from General Virtual Assistant to Web Design and Blog Support. I find that I am most happy when I’m tinkering with WordPress and love the challenge of troubleshooting.
At one time, I decided that I would offer Freelance Writing services, Are You Ready to Hire a Freelance Writer?. I soon learned, after accepting a full-time continuous gig, that I wasn’t that good at writing on-demand. I started out well, however soon became “brain-dead”. I know there were also many other things that contributed to my lack of writing, however, I just couldn’t keep up the flow.
Sadly enough, I had to let a friend, who was a Client, know that I could no longer continue writing for her. I don’t like to quit, but I knew my content would not be up-to-par.
WordPress Web Design
My passion lies with WordPress and designing. Even if it’s something small like changing the fonts or colors on a website, I love the challenge. I take pride in the work I do and work to help make the Client’s vision come true. There’s no sense in sugar-coating something if I can’t do it. I will confess and then find a way to complete the job.
Yes, I don’t declare myself a Pro at WordPress web design but I do know more than the average and am learning more “code” every day.
Supporting other bloggers is also something I’m very passionate about. I love having a blogger/client ask me a question about their website and me having a solution for them. Unfortunately, again, I’m not a Pro but feel that my 6+ years of experience is a great asset.
I am still trying to refocus my efforts on what matters most, Web Design and Blog Support. In the next month, I will be assessing my Rates and making them more economical. I understand some Bloggers don’t have a lot of money nor are they monetizing their sites. I’ve been there and totally get it.
However, you must understand the time involved with some of these projects. Some people request a flat rate for the project at hand. This works well for many. I, on the other hand, like to evaluate the project at hand. Not all are created equally, right?
So, I want to come up with a few generic packages that you, the Client, can customize. This will help ensure a better price and a quality project.
Dog Eat World
There are many Web Designers out there. Please don’t confuse them with a Web Developer.
As a Designer, I use Genesis Framework and create from there. At times, if requested, I will even use a Child Theme from Studiopress or other reputable Company.
As a Developer, these are those folks that create from the ground up. That is why the costs are substantially higher than a Designer (or at least, my rates).
Be sure when you are seeking someone to create your vision, that you ask questions. A good Web Designer will ask you many questions in order to grasp a better idea of what exactly your vision is. This is what I do.
As I move forward with my business, I will continue to grow and add or remove certain services. I think this is normal in one’s finding their specialty. I have received requests in the past for services I did not offer at the time, and will consider doing “projects out of the norm” in the future.
